Coming from the land of the Kalevala, ancient land of forests, lakes, small villages and epic songs, the Karelian Folk Music Ensemble is a lively and entertaining trio from the Russian Republic of Karelia, on the Finnish border. Their music ranges from ancient epic songs accompanied by Finnish harps to a capella Russian village songs, from old shepherd melodies on wooden trumpet and flutes to Finnish dances on accordions, and from scythe accompaniment to church bells. The members of the group are Igor Arhkipoff, Alexander “Sasha” Bykadoroff and Arto Rinne.

The lecture demonstration is by Arto Rinne, known for his great sense of humour and in-depth knowledge of Karelian instruments. Rinne, who will be speaking in English, is praised for his relentless work to preserve Karelian culture in Russia. Igor Arhkipoff and Alexander Bykadoroff will assist Rinne by demonstrating the ancient musical instruments.

Kaiku is "The Performer Of The Year 2006" by Finlandia Foundation
New York based Kaiku with their world music instrumentation are known for their “sweet soaring Finnish sounds”. Their harmonious songs are inspired by Finnish folklore and Finnish folk poetry, such as the Kalevala.
