The comparison between the contemporary art and the historic photographic work is made through four Finnish photographers: Johannes Gabriel (J.G.) Granö with his early twentieth century Russian photos; and the three contemporary photographers, Jorma Puranen, Pentti Sammallahti, and Taneli Eskola. These three have expanded upon Granö’s work by revisiting the North and the East of Russia and Finland.

October 3: Mother of Mine by Klaus Härö, a film CFF showed last spring will be shown as part of the University of Toronto East Campus Film Festival at 8 pm in Brennan Hall, St Michael’s College (between St Mary’s Street and St. Joseph Street). Admission free.

A film by Ilkka Vanne about women in Finland´s Lotta Service
during the Second World War (112 min. w/ English subtitles).
Promise is a story about three young women whose lives are afflicted by the Second World War. The film follows five years in the lives of Mona, Anna and Ruth, from 1939–1944. Promise portrays the young women’s longing, dreams and process of growing up at a time when Finland was thrust into war against the Soviet Union. It is a story of sacrifice, a women who set their dreams aside for their country and joined up in the voluntary Lotta Svärd Women’s auxiliary to work in the defence service. The contribution of the “Lottas” had a significant impact on both at home and on the front in Finland’s struggle to preserve its independence.

October 29: Finnish Canadian Documentaries – A Symposium.
The annual Finnish Studies Symposium will be held on Sunday, October 29, 1-5. followed by the Annual Awards Dinner. The symposium will feature prominent documentary film makers Albert and Pirkko Karvonen, Kelly Saxberg, Susan Poizner, and Stefan Randström. Film showings and presentations.Place: Father Madden Hall in Carr Hall, St Michael’s College, 100 St. Joseph Street.
November 8: Guest lecture by prominent Geography professor from Finland, Dr. Pauliina Raento on New Immigrants and Cultural Change in Finland.
