Director: Lauri Torhonen (English Subtitles)
A historical drama about Captain von Munck who is sent immediately after the Finnish Civil War to set up the eastern border between newly independent white Finland and Bolshevik Russia. Only a bridge separates and unites the two countries. The task is daunting as people in large numbers wish to enter Finland without identity papers, Russian nobility escaping the Bolsheviks, Russian Karelians whose Finnishness is in question, Russian Jews. Captain von Munck, who is required to make many decisions on his own, falls in love with a local woman and conflicts of conscience ensue. The shadows and reality of war fall over them.

The principal character of the movie is Juhani, haunted and oppressed by a traumatic childhood experience. After being bounced between foster homes, Juhani ends up in a boys' home, The Island. The place is run under the unorthodox yet interesting regulations of the superintendent, Olavi Harjula. Besides the seven boys and Harjula, the only other inhabitants of the Island are Harjula's wife and their two daughters, along with Tyyne, who's in charge of the livestock and the catering. The isolated community is a world of its own where the indomitable human spirit takes centre stage. The film is powerful, yet ultimately uplifting.
