CFF invites you to the best Finnish film of 2008

    The Home of Dark Butterflies

Based on the novel Tummien Perhosten Koti by Leena Lander

    Director: Dome Karukoski
Actors: Tommi Korpela, Niilo Syvaoja, Eero Milonoff, Kristiina Halttu, Marjut Maristo, Kati Outinen, Pertti Sveholm Matleena Kuusniemi

The principal character of the movie is Juhani, haunted and oppressed by a traumatic childhood experience. After being bounced between foster homes, Juhani ends up in a boys' home, The Island. The place is run under the unorthodox yet interesting regulations of the superintendent, Olavi Harjula. Besides the seven boys and Harjula, the only other inhabitants of the Island are Harjula's wife and their two daughters, along with Tyyne, who's in charge of the livestock and the catering. The isolated community is a world of its own where the indomitable human spirit takes centre stage. The film is powerful, yet ultimately uplifting.
The film received 10 Jussi nominations including best film and best direction.

Canadian Friends of Finland Education Foundation presents a seminar on

Sibelius - The Musical Heart and Soul of Finland

    Saturday November 7, 2009, 1-4 p.m.

The seminar will be hosted by Rick Phillips, the former host and producer of CBC Radios Sound Advice, the weekly guide to classical music and recordings.
Much is made about the similarities between the people of northern climes like Scandinavia, Russia, and Canada. The symphonies by the legendary Finnish composer Jean Sibelius are famous for their suggestions of mists, hoar frosts and icy landscapes. Bridging the gap between 19th and 20th century music, Sibeliuss romanticism is unique - dark and brooding at times, joyous and colourful at others, wrapped up in music of great sweep and epic power. Please take this opportunity to add to your musical knowledge and enhance your enjoyment of great music by one of the worlds great composers.

    $25 for CFF members, $35 for non-members
