    Canadian Friends of Finland present

    Letters to Father Jacob

    (Postia pappi Jaakobille)

    Klaus Haro, director

    2009 Drama
    English subtitles
    Duration 1h 12 min

Letters to Father Jacob follows two wonderful, moving characters each on their own unusual path. The two paths cross when Leila, who has recently been pardoned from a life-sentence for murder, goes to work as a personal assistant for Father Jacob. Leila is only used to taking care of herself, and a job as an assistant to Father Jacob does not come easy. Two fully different worlds get mixed unexpectedly, and the roles of a helper and a person in need for help turn around.

The visually-stunning, careful and finely-honed directing by Klaus Haro features wonderful performances by Heikki Nousiainen and Kaarina Hazard.

Letters to Father Jacob has won Best Film award in three Film Festivals in Europe this year.

    Wednesday January 27, 2010 at 7 pm.

    The House of Branching Love

    (Haarautuvan rakkauden talo)

    Directed by Mika Kaurismaki
Based on the novel by Petri Karra

    2009 Comedy/Drama
    English subtitles
    102 minutes

With: Hannu-Pekka Bjorkman, Elina Knihtila, Antti Reini, Anna Easteden, Tommi Eronen, Kati Outinen, Ilkka Villi.

A hilarious and harrowing exercise in marriage prevention, Mika Kaurismaki's "The House of Branching Love" has been described as a Finnish "War of the Roses", and is probably Kaurismaki's most polished production - a departure from the dry, droll, low-tech fare for which he's better known.

Family therapist Juhani Helin, 35, and business trainer Paula Helin, 34, decide to divorce in a civilized manner and move to separate addresses after selling their common house. But the pandora's box of their marriage flies open and releases the plagues of love and hate.
